Pakistani army chief calls for avoiding conflict
Pakistani army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Monday called for the need to avoid conflict with rival India, days after Pakistan moved its troops along the Indo-Pak border amid tensions following last month's terror attacks in Mumbai.
AFTER FLEXING the military muscle for the last one week, Islamabad seems to have decided to scale down the level of warmongering with arch foe India. The all powerful Pakistan army chief stressed on Monday (December 29) that the country needed to avoid conflict with India.

This statement assumes significance as large number of troops have been mobilised by the Pakistani army on the border between the two countries after tension escalated in the aftermath of Mumbai terror attack.

Pakistani army chief, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said that it is important to de-escalate the tension and avoid conflict in the interest of peace and security.

Kayani made the statement on Monday during talks with a senior Chinese minister.

The positive statement is in line with the talks between senior Indian and Pakistan military officials last week on the hotline linking both the countries.

The directors general of military operations (DGMOs) of both the countries established contact after reports said that Pakistan had started to mobilise troops on the international border with India.

Relations between the two countries went downhill after India demanded action against the terrorists, who executed the Mumbai terror attack, in which 165 people were killed and scores injured.

India has also demanded that Pakistan hand over the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) members responsible for planning and executing the Mumbai carnage. Concrete evidence by India as well as other countries including America has helped the Indian cause for action against non-state actors responsible for this heinous crime.

Pakistani army had last week deployed troops along the Indian border after tension escalated between the two neighbours, who have fought three wars since 1947.

To defuse the situation, Pakistan’s important ally China had sent a senior minister to discuss the matter and bring some calm to the strained nerves. Both America and Russia have also asked both the nuclear armed countries to stay calm and resolve the matter peacefully.
