The attack on PNS Mehran in Karachi on Sunday night lasted for more than eight hours when heavily armed militants lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately at the defence personnel. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
THE OUTLAWED militant group, the Pakistani Taliban, today claimed responsibility for the naval base attack that took place in Karachi on late Sunday night. The face-off between the militants and the defence personnel lasted for more than eight hours. The attack started at around 10:40 pm wherein, a group of heavily armed militants lobbed grenades and started firing indiscriminately killing five personnel on the spot.
The attack, which is widely believed as a reciprocation for the assassination of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, found its focal point at the PNS Mehran located in Faisal. The attack has paralysed the activities in the country’s largets port city Karachi and initial reports suggested that about 10-15 militants stormed into the naval air base and conducted the attack although early morning. Reports from Pakistan did not rule out the possibility of 20-25 heavily armed milirtants.In the attack, the United States supplied P3C Orion long range reconnaissance are believed to be destroyed.
While conversing with the media in Karachi, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the Karachi attack is embarassing for Pakistan. He further condemned the attacks by adding that the Taliban and Al Qaeda have announced that they will attack Pakistani installations and of course the armed forces and they have done that. Pakistan is suffering, Pakistan is a victim, but we have the courage and resolve to fight.
