Pancreatic cancer on a rise in India
Pancreatic cancer gained much attention after the legendary Apple-co-founder Steve Jobs lost his life to the disease. Pancreatic cancer is caused due to consumption of fatty foods and the cases on Pancreatic cancer are on the rise in India, say experts.

THE DEMISE of the legendary Steve Jobs has brought into focus the deadly ailment to, which Jobs lost his battle. Pancreatic cancer gained much of limelight after the tech geek was identified by the disease. However, doctors in India are of the opinion that pancreatic cancer may soon become a lifestyle disease if measures to curb are not brought into effect at the earliest.

As per a report by experts, people in metros like Mumbai are more vulnerable to this disease owing to their lifestyle and unaccounted binging on fatty foods. Speaking with DNA newspaper, Dr Shailesh Shrikhande said that people eat fatty food which is one of the major causes of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Shrikhande went on to explain pancreatic cancer by saying that pancreatic cancer is of two types - neuroendocrine cancer, a less lethal form which Jobs was suffered from, and classic pancreatic which is deadly. There are more cases of the former in India. The tumours are located on the head of the pancreas. They block the bile duct and cause jaundice.

Shrikhande is the head of gastro-intestinal surgery department at the prestigious Tata hospital. He also added that out of the total cancer cases in the city, thirty five of them account for pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer, being a rare form of cancer has already been marked fourth in cancer related death in the United States. In India, every four to six, out of a lakh, suffer from pancreatic cancer and the number is expected to take increase - given the current unhealthy (little exercise and junk food) lifestyle that many people have.
