IN A major u-turn in the infamous Nithari murders case, Moninder Singh Pandher one of the prime accused in the Rimpa Haldar murder was acquitted by the Allahabad High Court on Friday. The High Court, while quashing the Lower Court's order, which sentenced Pandher to death, upheld the death sentence awarded to Surninder Koli, the co-accused in the case.

Both Pandher and Koli had filed appeals against the death sentence awarded by the lower court on charges of murdering and raping 14-year old Rimpa Haldar, one of the 18 victims of the Nithari killings.

A CBI court in Ghaziabad had convicted the duo on Fenruary 13, 2009. Both of them are facing 18 cases in connection with the Nithari murders.

It is pertinent to mention that both Pandher and Koli had come under the scanner after a number of girls went missing from the Nithari village. The girls were believed to have been raped and murdered at Pandher's house from where a large number of human skeletons were recovered in December 2006.
