Passengers kiss my hand: Bus conductor
This is what Vandana, a lady conductor by profession in Delhi, told this CJ when being interviewed. She joined this profession in August 2010. Her family is happy with the work that she has taken up. She earns around Rs 10,500 per month.
“SOME FEMALE passengers kiss my hand and give me their blessing,” says Vandana, one of the lady conductors who has been roped in by the Delhi government for Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses. She further adds, “It brings smiles upon many senior citizens inside the bus too, when they see me seated in the conductor seat”. She joined as a DTC bus conductor on August 2010.

Her family is happy with her job, though some people in our society do not appreciate girls in a conductor's seat, which has been dominated by males since decades. Ajay Singh, a frequent traveler in DTC buses, believes the change that has been initiated by the Delhi government is good as passengers would respect lady conductors more than their male counterparts.

“Initially, people did not believe that I was the conductor of the bus, when I asked them to purchase tickets,” says Vandana. But things have changed now as there are more lady conductors on various routes across the city. At present, there are more than 200 lady conductors.

She looks up to me with a sad look on her face and says, “Sometimes people take pictures and make fun of me”. She does not pay attention to these kind of people. When Vandana gets angry she just "stares back at them in their eye". But, she is happy that lady conductors across the city are included in morning shifts only. They start their work early morning from 6:30 a.m and continue till 2 p.m.

She is on a contract with the DTC for a period of 90 days, which gets renewed after the completion of the contract term. She earns Rs 10,500 per month, which plays an important role in the day-to-day functioning of her family.

The Delhi government decided to take in lady conductors as DTC was facing shortage in the number of conductors employed. As there were several DTC buses that were added for the Commonwealth Games, the need for immediate conductors became a necessity.

These lady conductors were selected by the concerned authorities after they succeeded in clearing the interview and the medical examination. They had to take up some first aid courses too.

Girls across metropolitan cities are becoming modern, and accepting jobs that were once ‘only for males’.
