Patients die as Rajasthan doctors strike work
As many as 40 patients have died in government hospitals in Rajasthan in the last week because of strike by doctors and it reflects the pathetic state of the health services in our country.

THE STRIKE by the 3500 resident doctors in Rajasthan has entered the 5th day and no amount of persuasion has been able to improve the situation – the striking doctors are adamant, demanding a pay hike and already 400 of them have been arrested for violating the RESMA (Rajasthan Essential Services Maintenance Act).

The strikers also include 20,000 National Rural Health Mission contract workers and thousands of in-service doctors. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is negotiating with the striking doctors and expects the situation to improve soon.

In the meantime, he has requisitioned services of doctors from the army, the BSF and other similar agencies and has requested private hospitals to admit patients and charge them at the rates prevalent in the Sawai ManSingh Hospital.

Rajasthan is not the first instance – there have been strikes in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. It is strange that doctors and others employees of the medical profession resort to such arm twisting tactics to get their demands across the negotiating table. They belong to a noble profession where money is only a secondary concern– taking care of ill should be their primary concern.
