UMAKANT MAHATO, top PCPA leader backed by the Maoists and the key suspect in the Jnaneshwari train sabotage was on Friday killed by security forces in West Midnapore district in West Bengal. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday.
The Pro-Maoist leader was shot after security forces received a a tip off from locals, who informed the officials about his presence. He was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. He and his companions were hiding in Mohanpur near Lodhasuli jungle. The special forces which comprised of CRPF, CoBRA and police personnel cordoned the area at around 1:00 am.Mahato was the leader of People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) which primarily is a tribal body. The same organisation was also accused for the Jnaneswari train accident. Confirming his death, West Bengal Director General of Police, Bhupinder Singh said that Mahato was killed sometime early morning today (Friday) following an encounter in a forest area of Jhargram. The encounter that lasted for 5 hours started at around 1:30 am.
As per sources, Mahato had been absconding since the train mishap took place on May 28. 148 people were killed, when in the Mumbai bound train derailed as the extremists had removed the clips on the tracks. Soon after the express train derailed, another freight train from the opposite direction collided which resulted in higher casualties.CBI had taken up the investigation of case and it had announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh for all the three accused. The other two accused in the case are Bapi Mahato, who was arrested by the police and Asit Mahato, who is still absconding.
