Peace agreements that include women are more durable: United Nations
To mark the International Women's Day (IWD), falling on March 8, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated in his message to the world community, "Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women means progress for all."

According to UN Women, this year's theme, "Equality for women is progress for all", emphasizes how gender equality, empowerment of women, women?s full enjoyment of human rights and the eradication of poverty are essential to economic and social development. It also stresses the vital role of women as agents of development.

The UN Women feels that over the years, IWD has become rallying point to build support for women's rights and participation in the political and economic arenas. "Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities," holds UN Women.

On the occasion of IWD, it will be pertinent to remind us Mahatma Gandhi's views on women. He had once said, "Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity...If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior...If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women."
