Pedagogy of the Oppressed: Book Review
The book titled 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed' is one of the most widely read book on education that describes how the oppressed and marginalized people learn.

‘PEDAGOGY OF the Oppressed’ is a landmark book in education that is written by the most famous educator of Latin America called Paulo Freire. The book proposes a relevant and appropriate pedagogy with a new relationship between teacher, learning strategy and the students from the oppressed section of society.

Influenced by the Marxist philosophy, the book was first published in Portuguese in 1968 in Brazil, and was translated and published in English in 1970. Now the book is available in many languages including Hindi called "Utapririton Ka Shiksha Shastra". The book is quite popular among educators that subscribes for the constructivist approach to learning as well as the critical and feminist pedagogies.

In the book views the commonly practiced traditional pedagogy as the "banking model of learning" in which the student seen like a piggybank to be filled with information. On the other hand the pedagogy advocated by Freire puts learners in the position of co-creator of knowledge along with the teacher and the community.

The book is divided in four chapters. The first chapter describes in detail the concept of oppression and the way to freedom from oppression. The second chapter critiques the traditional or banking approach to education. According to book, the traditional content-based teaching dehumanizes both students and teachers alike.

The third chapter deals with dimensions of human praxis of learning and change. While the fourth and last chapter of the book proposes ‘dialogics’ as a tool to free the oppressor and the oppressed through the use of cooperation, unity, organization and cultural synthesis.

Since both the English and Hindi versions of the books are available in India, the book must be made integral part of teacher education training. The pedagogy proposed by Freire is very relevant to improve the quality of primary education in the rural areas and marginalized communities.

The book has been translated in Hindi by Ramesh Upadhyaya and published by Shilpi Granth, Delhi. The English edition of book is published by Continuum, London.
