Peepli Live, the debut movie of Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri) has been selected by Film Federation of India (FFI) as official entry to the 83rd Academic Awards in Best Foreign Film Section.
AB NATHA nahi marega.....who would have ever thought that this very own dialogue from the movie will turn out to be golden words. Yes, Natha has registered his name in golden words in the books of Indian cinema. After giving a brilliant performance in the movie, Natha is making his way to Hollywood.
No! Natha is not going to act in any Hollywood movie. Its Peepli Live, the debut movie of Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri) has been selected by Film Federation of India (FFI) as official entry to the 83rd Academic Awards in Best Foreign Film Section.
Peepli Live is a political satire with some dark humor in it. It explores the topic of farmer’s suicides in India with political and media response. It’s a story of a farmer, who is about to lose his land due to government debts, the reality faced by Indian farmers. He has nothing in hand to save his land and cannot even borrow money from some money lenders also, reason being the same; he has no assets to repay the money. Every step takes him to a situation of a thought, a thought of suicide –a recourse that would entitle his family to claim benefits from government’s suicide aid scheme.
The story runs around his probable death and how media responds to it as every news channel is trying to raise their TRP's using the social issue of farmer suicides. Politicians try to take their own political advantage by encouraging him to commit suicide. It has already done wonders in festivals like Sundance, where director Anusha Rizvi won the best débutante director award for Peepli Live. Peepli Live was selected by the Film Federation of India (FFI) committee in Chennai on Friday. The other Indian films that were screened for the selection committee included , ‘Udaan’, ‘Rajneeti’, ‘Paa’, '3 Idiots', ‘Tere Bin Laden’, ‘Lahore’, ‘Well Done Abba’,'Road to Sangam’ ‘The Japanese Wife’, Konkani film ‘Pattchomunis’, Marathi films ‘Natrang’, ‘Pangira’ and ‘Mee Sindhutai Sapkal’, ‘Abhormaan’ (Bengali), ‘Kutty Srank’ (Malayalam), ‘Chak Jawana’, ‘Singam’ (Tamil), ‘Red Alert’, ‘Pazhassi Raja’ (Malayalam), ‘My Name Is Khan’, ‘Raavanan’ (Tamil), ‘Angadi Theru’ (Tamil), ‘Madrasa Patinam, Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ and ‘Road, Movie’. The producer, Aamir Khan said, “I’m really thrilled that my third film is going to the Oscars.” The other two films which had already booked their tickets to Oscars were Lagaan (2001) and Taare Zameen Par (2008). In a statement to press Aamir Khan said “It is always a special honour for me to represent India on a world platform and I would like to thank the Film Federation of India (FFI) for considering us worthy.” Now Natha has a new debt, debt of hope and belief of every single fan of Indian cinema, for that he has no option of committing suicide and that is the least the audience would want looking at his incredible performance in Peepli Live. Wishing Natha very best for his way to Academy Awards, hope Natha brings Oscars home and makes us proud.
