People angry over hike of diesel, cooking gas price
The hike in price of petrol and diesel has hit people hard. With the cost of living already at its peak, locals fear that the subsequent step will be hike in the prices of food.

IN A move that would push the prices of essential commodities further north and hit the common man, the union government on Friday raised the prices of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas.

On Friday, the price of diesel was hiked by Rs 3 per litre, kerosene by Rs 2 per litre and cooking gas by Rs 50. This steep hike is likely to hit the common man hard as it would push inflation across the board, as experts opine that hike in diesel prices will lead to demands by transporters to increase freight rates.

Along with the price hike, the government also abolished the 5 per cent duty on crude oil, slashed import duty on all petroleum products to 2.5 per cent and also cut excise duty on petrol.

While the petroleum ministry described the price hike as nominal, people in general are unhappy over the decision of the government. In Gurgaon, local residents criticized the hike saying that the government should work towards reducing inflation instead of hiking prices.

Rakesh Sharma, a government employee, said that it is becoming very difficult to make both ends meet. “Already the cost of living is so high and this hike in gas prices will hit the people most”, said Sharma.

Women in particular are angry with the rise in price of cooking gas as they feel that it the most important commodity in their kitchens. “The government is least worried about the poor women, who were already finding it difficult to buy gas cylinders for cooking”, said Asha, who works as a maid and uses a small cylinder for cooking.

Most of the people like her buy gas in small cylinders, which are already priced exorbitantly. It is now being feared that cooking gas is likely to go out of the reach of such users.

With cost of living already on the higher side in Gurgaon, local residents also fear that the latest price hike will also have a cascading effect on price of vegetables and fruits, along with food.

“The government wants people to eat and drink air it seems,” says Satyender, adding it is also polluted these days.
