People in Andhra Pradesh need to look beyond Hyderabad
The time has come that the UPA government takes a decision on Telangana issue and make clear whether it is possible to separate Telengana from Andhra Pradesh or not. If central government feels separation is the only answer, it should do it immediately.

It shouldn’t drag the issue just because it fears the decision could lead to its loss in the general elections. There can’t be a permanent power on this earth. If you are honest and want to do something for the people of the state, announce schemes and funds for the development of the state.

The idea of keeping Hyderabad as joint capital of the two regions is also not good. That will hamper the development of Andhra for some more years. Whatever the opinion of the leaders, take a decision and end this blame game politics.

What is the wrong in separating the Telangana? In India, the division of states is not done judiciously. Therefore the issue of discontent among the people and leaders always remains. During freedom struggle there was no barrier of language. All were united then to agitate for freedom against Britishers.  In princely states, there were people with different languages.

But there was one advantage. Chennai was the capital of Madras, a princely state at the time of independence. When Telugu people were separating they got involved in a conflict with Tamilians. Both had argued that Madras was theirs. Though Telugus’ strength was more than Tamilians, leaders like C.Rajagopalachari and others strongly opposed and finally then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had no chance to give it to Andhra.

Now the same situation has happened to Andhra. Telugu speaking people are not united like Tamils when Andhra was separated and now also Andhra is not one like Telangana people. When I was working in Kadapa district as a journalist for a newspaper I happened to meet a leader Dr. MV Ramana Reddy. He spoke to me at length about Rayalaseema and Andhra politics and finally told me that Andhra people particularly Krishna district people cheated them by accepting capital to backward Raiaseema region and taking Krishna waters  to Krishna, Guntur and West Godavari districts.

Then Karnool was to become the capital of Andhra for a couple of years. If Vijayawada had been the capital of Andhra the question of merging Andhra with Hyderabad wouldn’t have arisen. When Andhra was merged with Hyderabad state the population of Hyderabad was four lakh. The entire state was more backward than Rayalaseema.

Andhra was at fault when it agreed to six-point formula. If Andhra would have been separated during the agitation of 1969, it would have been the wealthiest state with all-round development.

Now what is the actual position of Andhra and Rayalaseema regions? Everything is lost to Hyderabad. Andhra Pradesh means nothing but Hyderabad. Thus Andhra has lost all to Hyderabad. All central institutions are in Hyderabad. All research centers are in Hyderabad. NIT is in Warangal, which is a Telangana City. IIT is in Hyderabad. Agricultural University is in Hyderabad. Fortunately there is a medical University, the first of its kind in the country, in Vijayawada because that was founded by NT Rama Rao, who belongs to Vijayawada.

Chandrababu Naidu also spent funds totally on Hyderabad and a little interest has been shown towards Visakhapatnam.  For YS Rajashekhara Reddy, Andhra Pradesh only meant Hyderabad and a little importance was given to Visakhapatnam as it was a sea port and headquarters of Eastern Naval Command. The remaining Andhra Pradesh meant nothing.

Telangana people are also suffering because none of the districts in the region have got any funds for development. Now Telangana and Andhra people want only Hyderabad. Why?

After six-point formula, Andhra leaders particularly Krishna spent crores of rupees in Hyderabad by establishing industries ignoring Vijayawada. Now Telangana people demand they want Telangana only with Hyderabad.
