Perfectionist Bindra shoots India to top
Abhinav Bindra's sterling performance in the Olympic games as well as other international events has put India on top in the shooting arena. In his very first competition, Bindra won medals and that string is continuing till date
ABHINAV BINDRA, the reticent yet exceptionally gifted shooter from Chandigarh, created history on August 11, 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, when he won India’s first individual Olympic Gold medal in 10m air rifle event.

Bindra’s excellent effort gave India its first Olympic gold in 28 years, after the men’s hockey team won the Gold in 1980, Moscow Olympic games. The ace marksman improved on the Silver winning performance of Lt Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who had grabbed the second place in double trap shooting at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Bindra was born on September 28, 1982. During his very first year in competitive shooting in 1995-96, he won six gold medals in the Punjab State shooting meet. In 1999, he became the national champion and also won a gold medal and a silver at the SAF games in Kathmandu.

At the Munich world cup in 2000, Abhinav set a new world record, thus putting India for the first time in the global map of shooting. In 2001, he registered a grand feat by winning 12 back-to-back European medals, which won him the Arjuna award and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for that year. The gold at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth games was a defining moment in his career.

His exceptional feats have helped India carve out a niche for herself in the domain of shooting and above all for the golden effort in the Beijing Games. Bindra’s name will remain etched forever in golden letters in the annals of Indian Sports.
