At present we can see that this law can be well applied to define the high turnout of voters during the assembly election in four states. Whatever is the result of the mandate in these elections the real victory of democracy has already been achieved.
So it is really imperative to understand what made people more precisely the Indian Middle class - who otherwise like to see the result in the TV sets at their home instead of going to the polling booths - turn out high in numbers to exercise their fundamental duty i.e. voting during the assembly elections in four states.
Undoubtedly unless a very strong force from inside applied nothing could have done this i.e. high increase in percentage of voting.
In fact in recent years it can be noted that there has been an increase in participation of people in social and public affairs which again proves that there is a sufficient jerk from inside.
History tells us that in times of crisis, people look for change.
That means when things are going well, people don’t bother too much about the world surrounding them. But when things go wrong, people just do the opposite i.e. they start thinking too much for the change.
In recent years there have been major factors that really pushed the middle class from their comfort zone. While the hot potato and tearing onion (read, sky rocketing inflation) wrench their budgets and challenged their economic well being, the failure of law and order and increasing crimes in the public life threatened their sense of security.
Things do not stop here. The extensive corruption and the derision of politician towards public opinion has really been brain storming that made people feel totally helpless and compelled them to understand and realized their lack of participation in democracy.
Other issues like increasing demand for job by youths, educational requirements and the uncaring attitudes of people in authority towards normal people etc have their own share of giving a jolt.
Another factor that helped people comprehend the reality is the revolutionary technological and scientific changes in communication media. Almost everyone now days have a technological access to get connected to immediate world in particular and global world in general.
In other words we can say that there has been an increasing awareness of political and social issues that are enough to change the perception of people.
Democracy normally revolves around four Ps i.e. People. Participation, Power and Performance. The normal trend till now was the Participation of people was woefully less which actually affected the performance of people in power.
But things are totally different now. Last few years changed India. People are looking for radical change in their political, economical and social life. As the Participation of people has tremendously increased so now the political parties and representatives who are going to win in the assembly elections are now in notice.
They will be in constant monitoring of Public Camera. The same spirit will remain so and is equally applicable in future general elections. Now it doesn’t matter which party wins as anybody who wins will have a prime requirement of performance.
They have to perform as now as there is another P attached with Democracy i.e Perish.
People have participated heavily to give Power to Political Parties and Representatives. Now they have to Perform or else Perish.
As the inertia of traditional thinking is being shaken by the realities of a new age this trend of thinking will remain so from now onwards in Public Life. The future General elections undoubtedly comes under this domain for sure….isn’t it???
