Specifically, Pakistan’s problem is a reaction to events in Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. In Syria, Sunnis are fighting a tough battle with Alawite Shias with Mr. Assad showing no sign of stepping down. That’s why Pakistani Sunni radicals are reacting towards Hazara and other Shias. In Iraq again Sunnis are demanding more representation and say in the government. Again, Sunni radicals are reacting to this believing Shias in Iraq are committing atrocities on their Sunni brothers.
Saudi Arabia is a classic example of Islamic societies importing diffusiveness from within. In Saudi Arabia, Shias are not considered as Sunnis’ equals and the Saudi state denies many rights to Shias there. Many in Pakistan may consider it as just and compatible with the laws of Islam. The ultra-radicals among them may consider Shias as non-Islamic too. Also, the more liberal Turkey is turning towards conservatism. All these events contribute to the unstable thinking of radicals worldwide; specifically in Pakistan.
Nobody should think that Pakistani elites would have much problem with Iran or Iranian nuclear program. Iran is Shia-dominated state and elites generally speaking do not mind majorities. It is the not a mere conflict within Islamic societies but participation of nation-states along the line of majorities-sects which is the more important cause of increased violence in Islamic societies. The polarization has never been so potent.
For Pakistan, which has lived India for around millennium since the arrival of Islam, Anglicization and Westernization appears the handiest tool in the hand of state to contain the extremism and religious jingoism. Pakistan should interact with all kinds of nation-states and should not abandon its relationship with India.
It would be foolish on the part of Sunnis to consider Shias as their half-brother or even non-Islamic. In order to promote inter-sectarian harmony the value of life for as many people as it is possible should increase in the Islamic world. For that appreciation of beauty, comforts, sex, wealth should increase. Pakistan needs to go in for wealth generation but that is possible only after coupling and interacting heavily with the West. Updating with modern societies and technologies are the most urgent requirement of Islamic societies. They need to embrace modernism and should not consider consumerism as the tool to contain and defeat the rise of the West. The talent in Pakistan should diversify and maximum people should dream more and think about harnessing their potential to the fullest. In short, Pakistani people should be more demanding and consuming.
The fact is that there is something fundamental wrong about the way we approach our lives. As long as people do not find it precious many among them would be ready to die for a cause. But not all can think in the same manner. Neither do too many people understand investment, coupling and interaction. In fact they are being misinterpreted by BRICS nations too and since it has become fashion to import diffusiveness in the West, many Westerners also misinterpret these terms.
The world needs to learn to call a White a White and a Black and Black. But simultaneously it would be completely erroneous if a culture or a civilization is labeled as bad. The West should not have anything against the theological implications of preaching of Islam, and they should easily accept that Shariah would be law of land of increasing number of Muslim majority nations. What they need to make sure is that minorities in those nations are not persecuted.
The world needs to criticize political violence. But it should be careful when dealing with it. As of now there is no end to the violence in the Islamic world and in many more places. Only tool available for the West is to create mutual stakes by investment, coupling and interaction even though it would be not effective many times. But the West should never abandon capitalism and innovation, and it should always promote consumerism all over the world. Consumerism is the most important factor in creating bonds within people and reducing the amorphousness in societies.
