PESIT formula racing team wins national racing event
Team Haya, the formula racing team of P.E.S. Institute of Technology has won the 'SKID PAD' event in SUPRASAE 2011, held at Madras Motor Sports club Chennai beating 44 other college teams from all over India.

TEAM HAYA, the formula racing team of P.E.S. Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, has won the ‘Skid Pad’ event in SUPRA SAE 2011, held at Madras Motor Sports Club, Chennai, beating 44 other college teams from all over India.

The SUPRA SAEINDIA 2011 is a competition, which presents under graduate and post graduate engineering students the task of designing, modelling and fabricating a formula type racing car, which is evaluated on various parameters. The concept behind SUPRA SAE INDIA 2011 is that a fictional manufacturing company has contacted a design team to develop a small Formula style race car. The prototype is to be evaluated for its potential as a racing car.

Speaking about the win, CEO of PES Institutions Prof. D. Jawahar said, “We are extremely happy about the achievement of our students. The win has re-enforced the aim of PES Institutions in moulding students into individuals who can take up any type of challenge in the competitive world. ”

As part of the competition the teams have to participate in several individual events such as Static Events which include Design Evaluation, Cost Report, Marketing Presentation and Dynamic Events which include Technical Inspection, Skid Pad Test, Acceleration Test, and Endurance etc.

The objective of the SKID-PAD event is to measure the car’s cornering ability on a flat surface while making a constant-radius turn. The driving path is a pair of concentric circles, the inner radius of 15.25m and outer circle of 21.25m in diameter. The car enters tangentially to the circles and does two laps in the clockwise direction and two laps in the anti clockwise direction. The team that can do this task in the shortest amount of time wins this event.

Team Haya of PESIT won this difficult event from among 45 participating teams from across country. The team was presented with a Cash Award of Rs. 50.000/- for winning the event. The team was mentored by Faculty Advisors, Prof. S.S. Patil and Prof. V. Krishna of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The team was heavily supported by the Management of PESIT and the Principal Dr. K.N. Balasubramanya Murthy, with the CEO of PES Institutions Prof. D. Jawahar taking personal interest in the project.

The car developed for SUPRASAE 2011 used a naturally aspirated 796cc Maruti engine delivering Max net power (kw) of 26@5000 and Max net torque (Nm) 59@2500. The car used Double unequal length A-arm push rod actuated on vertically oriented springs and dampers in the front and double unequal length A-arm push rod actuated on horizontally oriented springs and dampers at the rear and top speed of 150km/h.

The team members are Francis Joseph (6th Sem Mechanical Engg.), Sunil DS (6th Sem Computer Sciencel Engg.), Pushpak R (6th Sem Mechanical Engg.), Murtaza Rangawala (6th Sem Electrical Engg.), Abhimanyu R (6th Sem Electronics and Communication Engg.), Varun K (6th Sem Electronics and Communication Engg.), Adarsh Kumar (6th Sem Electronics and Communication Engg.), Niranjan Arya (6th Sem Electronics and Communication) and Pradyumna M K. (6th Sem Mechanical Engg.)
