SOMETHING IS seriously dysfunctional about today’s generation as more and more people are involved in guilt-free crimes. To shoot a woman at a bar, sexually assault women at New Year ’s Eve and to kill just for the sake of ego, as in the case of Kenan and Reuben, makes one wonder: what kind of environment do we live in? It is not as if the yesteryear India was crime free but the cause of crimes were never so trivial. To make matters worse, in the Kenan Reuben case when the accused were lined up to be identified, on recognition by the witnesses the accused laughed at their faces.

This disturbing fact must be analysed as more and more people are committing heinous crimes and are getting away with it, maybe that is why the ‘no-care- attitude’ among them. Jitendra Rana, the main accused of the Kenan Reuben case laughed at the face of the identifier and said ‘Phir Milenge.’ He obviously does not feel any remorse that he actually killed two men for just his ego. Previously, everyone thought that whatever happened might have occurred at the heat of the moment but after this Avinash Solanki, the complainant in the case said that they had no regret.
Another disturbing fact that must be addressed is the fact that public allowed a gang of 20 armed men to attack two unarmed men. They just watched the entire thing happening in front of their own eye without protesting. Although a lot of debate took place on the same topic after the murder but nothing conclusive came out of it. Indian political parties supported the move to make sexual harassment offences non-bailable. Kenan and Reuben’s family have been demanding a quick justice and zero tolerance to sexual harassment.
But will anything change or are we waiting for another Kenan Reuben so that they can create candle vigils, headlines and heated arguments in various news channels.
