The Bulgarian Police force has landed in a soup after a Facebook page, showing them taking nap in broad daylight and drinking beer whilst on duty, became viral. The page has created a controversy in the country with one of the govt officials calling the creator of the page as a 'village idiot'.
A FACEBOOK page has managed to bring embarrassment and shame to Bulgarian police force in Varna by posting pictures of cops napping in broad daylight during duty time. Named as 'Photograph and Officer' the page shows a battery of officers sleeping in their vehicles, parking in slots reserved for disabled people and drinking beer ashamedly in their uniform.
A truly wonderful tactic to outdo corruption and catch the guilty red-handed but the act did not go well with the cops of the area (obviously). As was reported in telegraph.co.uk, one of the creators of the innovative page Bojan Maximov was termed as "village idiot who has nothing to do" by Kalinka Pencheva, an interior ministry spokesman of Varna. The spokesperson was sacked but this page further defiles the already bad reputation of the police force, which is notoriously corrupted. Talks that the force is mismanaged also surface once in a while.
The creator of the page, Maximov has threatened the-now-sacked-spokesperson with legal actions but has also alleged that he was roughed up by the police over the matter. He felt insulted and wants GBP 8,000 in compensation.
The Facebook page in itself became quite a hit in Bulgaria as these things catch up like wild fire in the virtual world. Adding more spoof pictures and caricatures a number of people have posted similar pictures in the page to make it more lively. One picture showed police officers dancing on pavements while there was one of a cop turning the cart wheel. The number of members of the page has also risen to 11,000.
