Players will benefit from transparency in BCCI: Sharad Yadav
Many former cricket players and legends have also echoed similar views along with the MPs of several political parties who have been advocating for the transparency in the conduct of sports bodies especially the BCCI which controls the game in India.
SENIOR PARLIAMENTARIAN and Janta Dal United (JD-U) national president Sharad Yadav has always advocated for greater transparency in all the departments whether they come under the control of any government or in the private sector where public dealing is directly involved or there is any interest of the people, as he feels fair dealing and unbiased conduct of the officials can only curb corruption and restore public faith in the institutions.
Sharad Yadav was giving his opinion to the media when he was asked to comment on the Bill that the sports ministry was bringing in the House where the ministry wants to put the game of cricket under the control of sports ministry and wanted the BCCI to come under the ‘Right to Information Act.’ The Cabinet though has turned down the sports Bill following strong resentment from the NCP leader, and former BCCI president, Sharad Pawar. Senior Congress leader Rajeev Shukla also said to the media, how the government can bring the BCCI under the ambit of the RTI act as the body was not taking any grants from the government? “As per the ruling of the Supreme Court, only those bodies which have been receiving grants from the government can be put under the purview of the RTI Act. I have not seen the Bill in detail and am just only putting my views on the reports that were made available to me by the media,” said Rajeev Shukla. However, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav said what was wrong if the government wanted to bring more transparency in the game of cricket. “There have been cases of match fixing and scandals of betting keep coming quite often and that has shaken the faith of people in the sports and players as well. We will see what the Bill is all about once it comes before the Parliament,” said Yadav. RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav also wanted the game of cricket to be brought under the sports ministry. However, Sports minister Ajay Makan has said the government’s intention was not to target anyone. The ministry only wants to bring in more transparency in all the games and one can see the Bill just not only cover the game of cricket but it has included all the games that are being played right now in any part of the nation. The Cabinet has turned down the Bill but it seems the government would put it up again may be later after consulting few more political heavy-weights. There can be some minor changes in the Bill but now it looks the government do not want the BCCI to control the game of cricket alone as it involves huge amount of money. Many of the former cricket players and legends have also supported the similar views as expressed by many senior MPs on the Bill whether we talk of legendary Sunil Gavaskar or Kapil Dev. Gavaskar said if there was nothing wrong in the BCCI books then what the authorities fearing off? Kapil Dev too said there was no need to create an unnecessary controversy and if the BCCI would be made transparent in their deeds then that would restore the faith of millions of cricket fans across the globe not only in the game of cricket but also in the institutions that control the game. Former test player and MP Kirti Azad also said there can be some differences among the members of the Cabinet on some points like fixing of age and tenure of the officials in various cricket associations and how the selection process would be done on selecting the panel of selectors and so on, but the real issue was to make the body of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) completely transparent. How they have been collecting and generating the funds globally and spending the same can be of great help to many other sports organizations which right now, have been struggling to generate the funds. It seems the government is in no mood to leave the game of cricket this time, and after a few changes to the Bill, the sports ministry is all set to control the game of cricket now in India as some of the members and people of India were also raising question on the selection of a national team by a private board. Many of the sportsmen also feel the same way that the national team in any sports should be selected by the body functioning under the control of the government of India that makes the team legitimate. Well the tug of war is on between the BCCI and the Ministry of Sports right now, and things will be cleared after the Bill would be tabled in the parliament when the session reconvenes.
