Plea to education minister: Improve quality of government institutions
Over the years, 'education' has become a large knowledge area under social sciences and soft sciences that most of educational functionaries associated with teaching, non-teaching and para-teaching suffer a relapse to 'educational illiteracy' since they do not remain in touch with the latest happenings. It is being said knowledge in education as subject of study is growing exponentially, educational knowledge is getting doubled in less than five years’ time, every time.

In such a scenario of knowledge explosion, a para-teaching staff (Education Minister to the babus who administer and preside over education system), in particular, becomes educational-illiterate soon leading to loss in quality of education. There is a general feeling that quality of education in India has suffered a serious setback due to the systemic lapses, whether we had 'highly qualified' or 'lowly qualified' education ministers at the center or in the states, it has made  no difference to the state of education.

The politics of education in India has intensified due to the ideological differences among the ruling parties and it has polarized educationists of the country giving rise to the menace of 'crony educationalism'.

Education is no more a neutral subject subscribing for its intrinsic values and characteristics. Consequently, 'crony educationalism' has taken deep roots in the last twenty years in the country leading more and more privatization and corporatization of education. Most politicians have opened educational institutions, a 'recession-free industry' and the corporate sector is trying utmost the 'colonization of minds' to make education a consumers' commodity.'

We should have a fresh debate on the issue 'what it means to educate and be educated' as well as dwell on the complexity of cultural environment and diversity among learners for quality education to improve education in the government sector over which the education ministers in various states and at center as well as the IAS officers preside over.

With the change of guards, a new set of crony educationalists and advisers at the centre are once again going fish into the 'troubled waters' of educational sea. Education, which was meant for social transformation and a tool to develop rational minds should not be allowed become further problematic and sick.

My humble plea is that the first step that government should take is to make it compulsory for the ministers and government servants including IAS officers to send their children to government institutions for education, to have better stake in the system they govern and work for.

Currently, not even the government school teachers are sending their own children in the schools they teach in. Some reports indicate that over 80 percent government school teachers are getting their children 'educated' in private schools. Moreover, most government senior secondary school teachers are indulging in tuition in big towns where they teach well but not in their schools. This menace of tuition and private coaching must also stop.
