PRIME MINISTER Dr Manmohan Singh addressed a press meet on Monday (May 24), in the national capital. In the last four years, it is PM’s first full-fledged encounter with the media.

Dr Singh addressed this press meet to mark the completion of one year of United Progressive Alliance-2 in office, and spoke on a host of issues including UPA-2’s performance, Indo-Pak ties, rising inflation, Naxal menace and many more.

To a question whether he would make way for Rahul Gandhi to become the Prime Minister during his current tenure, Manmohan Singh answere, "I would be very happy to make place for anybody who the Congress Party decides.”

"I feel younger people should take over. I will feel very happy to make place for younger people as and when Congress party decides, the Prime Minister said adding, "Rahul Gandhi is doing a good job in reviving Congress Party."

Speaking on the Indo-Pak ties, the PM said, “Trust deficit is the biggest problem between India and Pakistan. The gap between the two countries needs to be reduced without giving up interests. Gilani and I have agreed that trust deficit is a major problem between us.” India can’t realise its development potential unless it has the best relations with Pakistan, Dr Singh added.

“We are willing to discuss all outstanding issues with Pakistan. But it should ensure that its soil is not used for terrorism against India. We are hopeful that the dialogue process can move forward,” Manmohan Singh added.

“Naxalism remains the biggest internal security challenge facing our country. We have not underestimated the problem of Naxalism,” Prime Minister Dr Singh answered to a question asked about the criticism faced by his government for its anti-Naxal strategy.
