PRIME MINISTER Manmohan Singh on Saturday downplayed any differences between the government and the Congress party on the issue of the Indo-Pakistan joint statement issued at Egypt. Singh also said that the government had all answers related to the statement, which apparently gave an impression that India had capitulated to Pakistan on the issue of resuming dialogue.
Speaking to media persons, Singh said that he would clarify the issue again in Parliament, where the issue is to be debated again. Certain sections in the ruling Congress party as well as the government, have questioned the manner in which the joint statement was framed. The statement clearly alluded to a toned-down India agreeing to de-link dialogue from the issue of terrorism. However, what has raised the heckles of the political as well as strategic establishment, is the mention of Balochistan.
Pakistan has been accusing India of fomenting terrorism and supporting separatists in Baluchistan, an accusation that has been routinely denied by India. Analysts, however, pointed that the mention of this issue in the joint statement could be used by the neighbouring country, as tacit Indian admission of its suspected role in Balochistan.
