By coming close to India, USA sent signals to Beijing that the balance of power in Asia will be maintained by giving India her due place and not lionising China beyond a point. The Lakshman Rekha has been drawn and one may cross it at their peril.
THE RED carpet was unrolled for Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at the White House in Washington DC. American President Obama had ensured that the visit was as warm as possible and the two guests, Dr Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur were as at home in a foreign land as possible. The first lady Michelle Obama was at hand with her expert opinion in flower arrangements or chalking out a menu.
Amrit Kaur, a lawyer in USA and Upinder Singh,a professor in Delhi University, both daughters of Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur, were accompanying the state guest to the White House for the State Banquet.
The present visit of the Indian Prime Minister develops the strategic relationship between the two countries.
Of late an impression was forming in the minds of diplomats that, USA was going closer to China and distancing itself from India. It was thought that it would not be feasible to have close ties with both India and China. President Obama in his two and a half day visit to Shanghai and Beijing could not have effected parting of waters like Moses but, failed to create ripples too.
The world of diplomacy opined that Obama had kowtowed to the Chinese Emperor (read President) in the 21st century, whereas his predecessors had not done so even before the real Manchu Emperors who sat on the real throne. Thus, the Chinese rulers gained a diplomatic victory as the American President signed on the dotted lines.
Now by coming close to India, USA is sending signals to Beijing that the balance of power in Asia will be maintained by giving India her due place and not lionising China beyond a point. One may say that the Lakshman Rekha has been drawn and one may cross it at his or her own peril. The red carpet welcome and India flavour to the banquet in the White House should be seen in that perspective.
