PM Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi jointly launch UID project
The biggest beneficiaries of this programme will be the people who are economically and socially backward as it will also enable them an access to government programmes.
PRIME MINISTER Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today jointly launched the UID project in Maharashtra. To launch the project, they visited a small hamlet in Maharashtra to hand out 10 Unique Identification Numbers (UID) to the first ten people, who received the UID numbers in Tembhli village in Nandurbar, Maharashtra a little after noon on Wednesday.

The project is touted as UPA's most ambitious project so far. In the later stages, every Indian across the country will be entitled to have a UID number. The 12 digit number will act as a gateway to all the demographic details, bank account and will also enable people to have an access to government programs. It will also help in keeping an eye on the various issues such as misdemeanors during elections and swindling government funds which are meant for the people.

While launching the program, Dr Manmohan Singh said that the poor do not have any identity proof. Due to this shortcoming, they can not open bank accounts or get ration cards. They can not avail the benefits of government welfare programmes because of this and many times, these benefits were pocketed by others.
The biggest beneficiaries of this programme will be the people who are economically and socially backward as it will also enable them an access to government programmes, he added.

The function saw the presence of various dignitaries which also included Maharashtra Governor K Shankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Alhuwalia and UIDAI chief Nandan Nilekani.
