PM Modi greets people on Pongal; Tamils celebrate harvest festival with great fervour and gaiety
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the people on the occasion of various festivals across India. On the occasion of Pogal, he wished, "Pongal greetings to everyone!"

Since January 14 happens to be the first day of Tamil month, the Tamils celebrated Pongal festival with traditional fervour and gaiety. The festival is also known as Surya Pongal marked by thanksgiving to the Sun, rain, farm animals and Mother Nature for the bountiful harvest.

Tamils worship the Sun God and the Pongal pot is placed with rice and milk out in the sun to express the gratitude towards benevolent Sun.

On the occasion of harvest festivals, Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, "Happy Makar Sankranti, Lohri And Pongal.

Tamils today cooked their traditional rice dish in earthen or stainless steel pots decorated with a garland of flowers,  ginger, turmeric, sugarcane piece and banana. While the dish was being cooled people chanted people called out `Pongolo Pongal' several times.

 The dish was offered to Sun God to express gratitude and distributed as `prasad` along with blowing conches. The celebrants exchanged greetings and Pongal dish with their neighbours.

Last year, the fervour of Pongal was subdued but this year there is rich harvest are traders are doing a brisk business on the occasion of the four-day festival.
