PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Statue of Unity in grand style
The stage was set to unveiling the world's tallest statue in grand style, the Statue of Unity - dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India and also known as the Iron Man of India - by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31. It is reported in the media that inaugural event in Narmada district has been planned with the same grandeur of the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi.

The statue, designed and created by Ram Vanji Sutar at Sadhu Bet, 3.32 kilometre from the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river at Kevadia, is as high as 182 metre. It was in July 2014, GOI had set aside a huge sum of money for the completion of the monument along with development of its surroundings occupies over 20,000 square metres along with a 12 square km artificial lake. Access to the statue is through a 5 km boat ride.

The total cost of the project is around Rs. 3,001 crore for which construction was started on 31 October 2013 and completed by October 2018. The statue shows Sardar Patel in a walking stance. It is reported that the three-level base of the Statue has exhibit floor, mezzanine, roof with a garden and a large exhibition hall with exhibits that focus on the life and works of Sardar Patel.

Another feature of the statue is the observation deck at a height of 500  ft from the river bed can accommodate up to 200 visitors at a time for a panoramic view of Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges, Sardar Sarovar Reservoir, and Garudeshwar Reservoir.

The project was opposed by the local farmers, activists, tribal and environmentalists. Some political parties had been criticised the expenditure for the statue over other priorities like women's safety, education, other rural development activities and agricultural schemes.

Furthermore, the main contractors L&T had contracted with Chinese TQ Art Foundry for the bronze cladding of the statue, which was criticised by Indian National Congress.
