PM Narendra Modi's six tweets on 40th anniversary of Emergency: Calls it darkest period
Although 40 years have passed, the unpleasant memories and trauma that the citizens of the country went through during the Emergency period is still alive. It was June 25th, 1977 when the then president of India passed an ordinance citing a threat to the state and imposed an Emergency.

From that instance, the life of the people turned out into a nightmare till the emergency existed. All the fundamental rights were revoked, politicians were detained and a heavy suppression was imposed.

Media too got oppressed, together with all the opposition. Anyone, who raised the voice against the Emergency was harassed and made to face series of troubles. Let alone the freedom of speech, people were brutally beaten, attacked and pained. Evoking that evil period, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi today posted a series of tweets to also mark the 40th anniversary of the 'Emergency.'

In his first morning tweet, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the era as the "darkest periods in India." He mentioned how leaders were made to suffer and power was misused during those months.

PM Modi appreciated Jayaprakash Narayan while recalling his efforts to protect the democracy.

PM Modi positively acknowledged the effort of the people who did everything to retain the essence of democracy alive and fight really hard. Besides, he also praised people who resisted the draconian period and underwent that trauma.

In his another tweet, PM shared his personal experience of the era and how he learnt many things while going through such a bad phase.

Modi also termed the Emergency as a great opportunity as it provided a chance to work with various leaders.

Claiming "liberal democracy" as a key to growth, PM appealed to "do everything possible" to make the country more stronger and "strengthen the democratic ideals and ethos."

It is quite apparent that the Prime Minister has given an special emphasis to the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency. Notably several opposition leaders were jailed by the then Congress administration headed by former PM late Indira Gandhi.
