PM says cross-border terrorism is major threat
Inaugurating the Chief Ministers' Conference on Internal Security, the PM called for a coordinated response by the Centre and states on internal security. Dr Singh said that terror groups in Pak were planning to carry fresh attacks
PRIME MINISTER Dr Manmohan Singh on Monday 9August 17), identified cross-border terrorism as the most pervasive threat to country and warned that there were specific inputs that terror groups in Pakistan were planning to carry fresh attacks.

Inaugurating the Chief Ministers’ Conference on Internal Security in New Delhi on Monday, the PM called for a coordinated response by the Centre and the states on issues pertaining to internal security.

Dr Singh also identified terrorism by Naxalites as another major internal security challenge to India. He said that the problems posed by Left wing terrorism were more complex and needed a balanced and nuanced appraoch.

The PM said that government should discharge its responsibilities in an effective manner and work towards lessening the alienation of the people, which leads to growth of Naxalism. He also appreciated the steps taken by Home Ministry to check the terror threat and specifically cited the establishment of four NSG hubs across the country.

Dr Singh asked the state chief ministers' at the meet to extend all held to the NSG to ensure that the agency can fight against terror effectively. “The challenges posed by asymmetric warfare and terrorism as also the Left Wing Extremism can only be met through new ideas and more resolute actions and determination. We need to be ahead of the curve if we are to succeed as we must,” the Prime Minister said.

Earlier, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Monday, said that India could not lower its guards as the terror threat to the country had not gone down. Inaugurating the internal security conference in Delhi today, Chidambaram asked the state governments to initiate talks with the Naxals if they are ready to give up violence.
