PM's press conference was highly contradicting, evasive and confusing
Frankly speaking, anyone who witnessed the Prime Minister's press conference yesterday must be highly confused on the intent of the press conference and his messages. This perhaps has to go down as one of the most contradicting, evasive and confusing press conference ever. I am trying to dissect the entire episode for everyone's understanding.

First thing is sure that the press conference was orchestrated by the Congress Party so as to give clearance for anointing Rahul Gandhi as Congress’ Prime Ministerial candidate. The opening script was also written by Congress Party in a decent way. Contradictions started during the question and answer session with Dr Singh.

In the opening speech, Manmohan Singh admitted that his government failed in three major areas. Curbing corruption, not able to tackle unemployment as well as not controlling inflation. Frankly, these are vital and prime responsibility, which he he admitted where his government failed. This was scripted in the opening address perhaps to give ammunition to Rahul Gandhi who would fight against these three vital public interest sectors, which either Manmohan Singh didn’t understand or was forced to read. That’s exactly contradicting and confusing. Let’s take these issues one by one.

On corruption though he agrees his government failed, but during the question and answer session, he said it’s just false propaganda by media and opponents. Further he said that these corruption are from UPA-1 and the public has given a mandate for UPA-2 hence he is absolved from these charges. What’s the logic? If public mandate absolves one from the charges, then how can you address Narendra Modi as mass murderer despite Modi wining three elections post Godhra riot?

According to this logic, Modi too is absolved of all charges, irrespective what court and SIT says. Again the corruption are mostly of UPA-1 but those are exposed during UPA-2 rule. Thus when public voted for UPA – 2, they were unaware of 2G, CWG, Coalgate etc. Is Dr. Singh saying that because he won public mandate for second term, hence whatever form of corruption occurred in his previous term whenever may be exposed has no merit. That’s where perhaps he is contradicting himself, confused fully and confusing the public as well.

Similarly admitting failure to curb inflation in his opening speech, then saying that public earning has also increased along with inflation, he means to say that an increase of earning compensate the inflation. This is again contradicting the fact that the government failed in addressing unemployment. If there is no employment how will the earning increase?

He mentioned several times regarding Global economy for India's poor economic condition. The public may not be an economic expert like him, but common sense says, that there was a global recession during 2008-2009. Whereas, the Indian economy was not so effected during this Global slowdown but started stooping down. Everybody knows that there was a policy paralysis by the government, which discouraged investors not only from abroad but also domestic players.

Evading Virbhadra Singh affair, CAG to audit the Delhi Distribution company etc really proves that he really doesn’t have any answer. Then he repeatedly said that history will judge him how he served the nation. Why history and why not public? The democratic system provides the method for public auditing performances of government every five years. Does he accept that the public already rated his government very poor?

Many say Dr.Singh is an overrated economist and an underrated politician. It may be true. In his 23 years of political career, he achieved everything yet he is not ready to retire. Yes, I guarantee that he is neither retiring nor his press conference was a retiring farewell. If closely scrutinized, in the press conference he never said that he will quit politics. He is ready to work under Rahul Gandhi also. Post 2014, whether UPA returns to power or not, he is sure to get the post of Leader of the house or leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha.

Finally, whatever strategy of Congress or Dr.Manmohan Singh, I think it failed miserably because of the press conference being a highly contradicting, evasive and confusing.
