PM's relief turns Jagti into Kashmiri migrants township
The central government had sanctioned the township project with a view to provide shelter at a single place to provide facilities and assistance to the migrants. It would also help the community to maintain and preserve their culture and traditions.

AT LEAST 2160 quarters, which are being developed at the Jagti township for the rehabilitation of the Kashmiri Pandit migrant families living in various camps, would be completed by the end of December this year and 2058 more would be ready by May 2010. They are being constructed by the central government under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package for Kashmiri migrants.

The central government had sanctioned the township project with a view to provide shelter at a single place, which would facilitate the government to provide facilities and assistance to the migrants. It would also help the community to maintain and preserve their culture and traditions.
 
On Wednesday, November 4, Home Minister P Chidambaram jinspected the pace of work at the township. He had inspected the pace of work on 5242 flats. The team accompanying him went around number of blocks and inquired about the status of work.
 
Chidambaram also held a meeting with the 32 member advisory committee, constituted by the government to make suggestions for welfare of the migrants and to cooperate in the implementation of PM’s rehabilitation package for the displaced community.
 
Showing great concern over the their hardships, he said that he would endeavour to show results in the entire exercise, including their return to valley, protection and retrieval of their property and job recruitment.
 
The state's Revenue minister Raman Bhalla, informed him that the government has constructed a road and bridge from Jagti to Nagrota at a cost of Rs 5.06 crores, to ensure the connectivity of the colony to main highway.
 
The construction of Jagti township began in two phases. In phase-I, 1024 flats, at an estimated cost of Rs 51 crores were constructed at Muthi, Purkhoo and Nagrota. Spread over an area of 716 canals, it has been designed for a population of 25000, with about 20 per cent of the land utilised for raising construction and the remaining used for other facilities such as roads, drainage, parks etc.
 
Currently, 4218 flats in 176 blocks are under construction with 24 flats in each three storey block.
Against the approved project cost of Rs 295 crores for Phase II, the expenditure as of today is Rs 124 crores. The township was envisaged, keeping in mind the hardships faced by the migrants who were uprooted from their birthplace.
