Police lodges sedition case against Dr. Hiren Gohain
Amidst continued protests against the controversial Citizenship (amendment) Bill, 2016, in Assam the police, on Thursday, reportedly, lodged a suo-moto case against distinguished scholar and critic Dr. Hiren Gohain under charges of sedition.

A case has been registered against Dr. Gohain under section 124 (a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the Latasil Police station, Guwahati. Addressing a public gathering assembled to protest against the Centre's move to pass the amendment bill in Parliament at the Latasil area on January 6 this week, Dr. Gohain spoke that the people of Assam may be compelled to raise demand of sovereignty for Assam if the Centre hesitates to heed their demands and concerns. Before him Akhil Gogoi, leader of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity and an RTI activist, in his speech said that question of sovereignty of Assam has still remained pertinent.

As per reports, the police have also lodged cases against Akhil and some others attended at the gathering for making such comments. The police action has been decried by many. Even some supports of Dr. Gohain as well as the protests have dared the police to arrest them along with him.

Moreover, many have criticised the Assam BJP-led government as undemocratic and fascist. On the other hand, the police, on Thursday, have clamped restrictions in some parts of Guwahati under the section 144 of the CrPC.

Several organisations and individuals have been protesting against the Citizenship (amendment) Bill, 2016, which seeks to grant Indian citizenships to those non-Muslim immigrants who had entered India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan facing religious persecutions in their motherlands before 31 December, 2014, and settled in the country, since last three years

Dr. Gohain, an alumnus of the Delhi University and the Cambridge University, is a former professor of English of the Guwahati University. He has been keeping voice against the Citizenship (amendment) Bill, 2016 ever since it had been tabled in Lok Sabha for the first time in 2016. Apart from reviewing literature both in English and Assamese, he has been penning articles on topics related to society and politics. His thesis on Milton's 'Paradise Lost' has brought to him tremendous acclamations from almost all over the world.

A follower of Marxism, Dr. Gohain was once offered a lectureship post by an American university which he had declined and came to Assam to serve here. At first he had joined in the Dibrugarh University and after few years he joined in the Guwahati University.
