Political chaos in Tamil Nadu: Congress blames BJP, but forgets that it only triggered the chaos
The Supreme Court verdict in Disproportionate Assets (DA) case has definitely dashed V.K. Sasikala's aspiration to become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. After being convicted, in a bid to save her control over the party Sasikala chose Edappadi K. Palaniswamy as AIADMK legislative party leader to be appointed as Chief Minister of the state.

Now, whether Palaniswamy will be CM or OPS, time will tell as it's difficult to speculate at the moment. But, one thing is definite that Sasikala is sure to lose control over the party in months to come and will surely head towards political oblivion. She is not Jayalalithaa and hence can't fight back. Her political career has ended abruptly for good.

The intention of this article is to examine Congress's allegations against BJP that it is intentionally trying to destabilise Tamil Nadu polity through misuse of office of the governor. Let's try to understand what really has happened.

On 5th February, Sasikala was chosen as leader of AIADMK legislative party. On 6th February, OPS tendered his resignation. The Tamil Nadu Governor had definitely no idea that OPS would revolt and there would be problems further. Thus he accepted the resignation immediately. He also received Sasikala's claim to be appointed as CM of the state.

In the meantime two things happened. On 5th February 2017 itself, a signature campaign was started appealing not to appoint Sasikala as CM. Around 4100 signatures were obtained by change.org. The signatures were sent to the TN governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, President of India and PM Narendra Modi.

On 6th Feb, the day Sasikala presented her stakes, Congress leader P. Chidambaram called a press conference asking the Governor not to invite Sasikala to form the government. On the same day a plea was filed in the Supreme Court to prevent Sasikala from becoming the chief minister till verdict comes in DA case. The Karnataka Congress government also raised this issue in the apex court.

Thus the governor of TN was definitely in a state of confusion regarding his next step although there were hints that Sasikala may be sworn-in as CM on 7th February. The governor asked for legal assistance from Solicitor General and left for Delhi to attend a marriage function.

The Solicitor General asked for one more day to give the legal advice. Thus instead of returning to Chennai, the governor went to Mumbai. On 7th February, the SC said that it will deliver the verdict in DA case in a week. The Congress and others started demanding that Sasikala must not be allowed to form the government till the verdict is delivered.

The point is simple. The Congress is an ally of DMK and being opposing party laid down some traps. They thought Sasikala would finally be sworn in as Chief Minister and if SC gives adverse verdict they can blame the governor as well as PM Narendra Modi for helping a culprit in becoming the chief minister not heeding to their demand.

Problem for everyone started in late evening on 7th February when OPS revolted. No one expected that. Thus the TN governor and central government opted for wait and watch policy whereas the Congress changed its track and started asking why is the governor causing delay in inviting Sasikala to form the government.

Just see the hypocrisy, first they demanded not to invite Sasikala. Then they filed PIL as well as urged the SC to deliver verdict in the DA case before Sasikala's appointment. And now, they are blaming the BJP government at the Centre for destabilising the TN polity.

And what's their accusation? That BJP wants to use AIADMK in Rajya Sabha. What the Congress has forgotten that the AIADMK in any case will support the BJP because it has to oppose DMK and its ally Congress. Then why OPS or Sasikala will matter for the Modi government as long as they oppose DMK, thus indirectly supporting BJP. Do you think that the BJP is fool enough to create a split that will ultimately help DMK (a Congress ally)?

This is the real story. It's the Congress who pressurised the TN governor through its press conference, by filing plea in the SC etc to not call Sasikala immediately to form the government. But taking advantage of the fast paced political developments it put entire blame on the BJP for no reason.

In this way only the Congress was fooling the people since last one decade. But no more. There are people who will expose trailing the chronological events even if they occur at a very fast speed. Had the Congress not done those things (objecting Sasikala through PC, filing plea in SC etc), Sasikala would have been appointed as CM of Tamil Nadu by 7th February (although she had to quit today followed by the SC verdict).

Dear Congress, please don't take people for granted.
