Politics of power and power of feudalism 03 September, 2012
News of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister bestowing 24 hr uninterrupted supply to privileged citizens of Rae Bareilly and Amethi, apart from 3 other fortunate districts, and Lucknow has not created sense of outrage it should have. Are we moving forward or backward?

I AM surprised at the muted reaction of media and hence the chattering classes to the news that Rae Bareilly will now get 24 hr. electricity from UP government courtesy a request from Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. In fact, a few news reports cited this as the shrewd power of Sonia ji. This is taken nothing more than ‘power play’ of Mulayam and Sonia.

I am incensed at the lack of sensitivity of the media and opinion leaders to this blatant show of a feudal mindset when I note that only 5 districts of UP will get 24 hr supply – 3 that elected ‘Yadav khandaan’ and 2 that elected ‘Nehru Gandhi khandaan’. Other lucky ‘riyasat’ is Lucknow, by virtue of it being the ‘rajdhani’!

Are we really living in 21st century? Are we really a modern nation that our ‘secular’ ‘progressive’ friends claim it to be? And talk of their being worried about ‘Hindutva’ types taking India back to 19th century with their moralistic stance! I am puzzled, what is worse.

People are so busy gossiping about financial embezzlements to the tune of billions of dollars, that they have overlooked utter moral corruption, embezzlement of people’s faith in a supposedly democratic India. Of all the perversions going on in the name of progressive politics that promotes communalism and casteism in the name of secularism, this is the worst form of perversion.

Throwing favours like 24 hr electricity on select few to the utter neglect of vast populace is nothing but a strong signal, if one was ever required, that we are regressing back to grand old days of feudalism.  Congress minister, Mr. Sahay’s defence of getting coal blocks for his brother reflects the same mentality of ‘special rights’ of conferring or snatching favours upon their favourites. We also have a history of railway ministers treating railways as their private property and bestowing  projects to their own constituencies and if not possible, to their own state.

What, prey,  is the mistake of other wretched citizens of UP who voted for Samajvadi party? Is it their mistake, (or their sins of their past karmas) that they were born in districts where their rulers didn’t fight elections? Ofcourse, the sub-human species who voted for opposition deserve the worst treatment, but even the supporters of Samajavadi party?

This news is so weird that only thing more weird is acceptance of this news as a ‘routine’ favour of one ruler to another. Or a signal of ‘changing power equations’ as our intellectual editors put it. Where are the people, who are supposed to be central to democratic idea? We have not been able even absorb the shocking revelations of the crooked ‘crony capitalism’ by the rulers professing their love for ‘aam aadmi’; and now we are witness to this feudal spirit of our rulers blooming under the benign flag ship of ‘socialist party’ aka ‘samajvadi party’.

We are plumbing to new depths each day. Infact, I avoid picking up daily newspaper now a days and prefer watching witless soap operas (regressive - to quote our progressive friends, who fawn over these new age socialists) rather than watch news editors hectoring politicians. We know both are playing games. Both are playing games of one-upmanship, professing to protect democracy and freedom of opinion. How do I believe them professing neutral stance, fierce fight for freedom when I know that many of them didn’t have guts to report destruction of their own properties during recent riots forced upon peaceful citizens of Mumbai by fundamentalist Muslims, when I know for a fact that news space can also be purchased?

Infact, on second thoughts, why should I be surprised that none of them have raised this issue of bestowing favours on  selected ‘praja’ by ‘raja’! I see no reason for our opinion leaders to raise their voice against this latest regression towards feudalism as it doesn’t affect their cosy relationship with rulers and media that provides them their daily butter and bread.

Mr. Sharda I think people like you are more interested in discussing wrong things of states where BJP or its allies or not in power. Whereas once it comes to BJP ruled states you people use to forget even every wrongdoing of states. In my opinion, Congress and BJP both are opposite side of same coin having different ideologies in terms of wooing electorate. As far as electricity is concerned in UP, what a CM can do when installed capacity even less than 50% of required power. No one can change the fate of any state or country within few months of power. CM of UP is new and progressive in nature. He is even different from his father. tell me whom people of UP should have voted? Congress or BJP one is run by one pariwar that is Gandhi Nehru pariwar and other is run by sangh pariwar. Both are runnning on the mercy of few selected ones whereas SP is much more democratic in nature as compared to these parties.

What about other districts Mr. Akhilesh? How can you ignore Varanasi, the religious capital of India. How can u ignore Allahabad, the holy city of Prayag? How can u ignore Ghazipur, the home to martyr Abdul Hamid? What is the criteria of selecting VIP districts?

This is clearly a case of corruption. How can Sonia Gandhi ask Mulayam Singh for a favor to her constituency only and that too in Parliament?

What about the other districts of UP? Have they done any crime that cannot be given power for even 16 hours a day?

The TOI dedicates nearly 4 pages to talk of Naroda riots verdict and the victory for the victims but it wouldn't talk of Ms Gandhi's favours to her constituency. Interestingly, no one would even highlight how Modi has managed to ensure 24 hr power supply to every district in Gujarat. Everyone belongs to the same league.

The politics of favoritism is the rule with ruling party. what we need to have is an ever vigilant and proactive citizen group which could not be created by our representative organisations, The priorities are missing from action. A strong chain of volunteers spread across the cities and villages can bring the administration out of its arrogance .

I am happy to note that atleast both the government did not put restriction to supply electricity only to the minorities(select previlaged few) or give them subsidies worst give free power only to those who vote them !
