Polling amidst tight security in Mah, Haryana & AP
Adequate security arrangements have been made by the Election Commission, which has taken special measures to ensure peaceful polling as the three states, Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh go to polls today.
EARLY THIS morning polling for new assemblies has begun in three states Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh amid tight security. Adequate security arrangements have been made by the Election Commission, which has taken special measures to ensure peaceful polling. The Election Commission has deployed 18,000 Central police forces in Maharashtra alone to ensure peaceful polling, particularly in Naxal-hit areas of Maharashtra.

In Delhi's neighbouring state Haryana, voting is going on to elect 90 legislatures. Above 1.31 crore eligible voters including 59 lakh women will decide the fate of 1,222 candidates. As many as 13,524 polling stations have been set up across the state and among them 3,214 have been identified as vulnerable. Following it's win, the Lok Sabha polls, ruling Congress advanced the Assembly polls seven months before the schedule in Haryana. Along with Congress, other major parties in fray are BJP, Indian National Lok Dal, BSP and Haryana Janhit Congress.

In Naxalite struck Maharashtra, polling is happening to elect the 288-member Legislative Assembly. An electorate of 7,56,34,525 will decide the fate of 3,559 candidates, including Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, his deputy Chhagan Bhujbal and 37 ministers. There are 1,820 independents, mostly rebels in fray. The number of women candidates is 211. There are 84,136 polling stations in Maharshtra.

Elections for 57 seats in the 60-member Arunachal assembly began early this morning. Aound 7.25 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in favour of 151 candidates. While Congress has put up its candidates in all 60 seats, three part candidates, including Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, have already been elected unopposed from the predominantly Budddhist district of Tawang. UPA allies, NCP and Trinamool Congress, have put up 36 and 26 candidates respectively in Arunachal Pradesh. The Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress is contesting for the very first time in the state and BJP has put up only 18 candidates.

As the last report came in, apart from Maharashtra, polling is going peacefully in other states. Naxalites opened fire in Gadchiroli area of Maharsthtra soon after the polling began this morning. While the campaign was by and large peaceful, Naxalites struck in Gadchiroli in Maharashtra last week, killing 17 policemen in an ambush five days before the polls. The area is under tight survelience of police and polling is going on despite Naxal threats.

Meanwhile, Janardhan Chandurkar a three-term Congress MLA from suburban Bandra in Maharashtra is being questioned by police over allegations that he distributed money to lure voters. Rival Shiv Sena workers had alleged that he was distributing money to lure voters and alleged that there were bundles of currency notes in his vehicle.

After excellent show in the Lok Sabha polls six months ago the assembly elections in three states is the first crucial test of popularity for Congress led UPA. While Congress is the ruling party in Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, it shares power with Sharad Pawar-led NCP in Maharashtra where the main opposition is in the form of Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. It will be really interesting to see, whether Congress passes the Litmus test or not.
