Poona Diagnostic Service brings in the Multi-Slice CT scan
The Poona Diagnostic Service has installed the one of its kind Multi-Slice CT scanner at their centre located at Poona Hospital. The machine stands apart from others due to its speedy results with high quality and a wide coverage of the organs.
THE POONA Diagnostic Service (PDS) which has been in the city since the last 17 years (operating from the Poona Hospital ) has installed the one of its kind Multi-Slice CT scanner at their centre located at Poona Hospital.

The machine that has been brought in from the United States of America stands apart from the others due to its speedy results with high quality and a wide coverage of the organs in the body. Approximately 3000 patients have been diagnosed with the help of this machine which includes approximately 1000 patients for brain, 1500 patients for body, 150 patients for coronary and heart, 400 patients for vascular angio.

“The CT scan machine which is already functioning since the last six months has been a great success so far. It has particularly helped patients with acute pain who need immediate diagnosis and treatment. For instance, if someone is suffering from acute chest pain the cause for the pain is detected within ten seconds and immediate treatment can be given thereby saving the life of the person”, says Dr Avinash Kelkar, Chief Radiologist
and has been reporting CT scans since inception in Pune.

Technically the machine has 64 channels and can take 128 slices as against other available CT scanners with 32/40 channels. In addition the machine scans in three dimensions and thereby providing a clear and concise image from different angles of the organ to help detect the problem.

One of the most important USP of this machine is that it is the only machine that has a non-invasive, cardiac scan which takes place in a matter of five heartbeats ie, within five to seven seconds the entire heart can be covered.

The Multi-slice CT scanner is also used in Oncology and helps in detection of the exact location of cancer and to the extent it has spread within seconds. Besides cancer detection, the machine is also very effective if a paralysis is detected. The machine helps the doctor to diagnose the cause of paralysis and then differentiate appropriate type of treatment to be given. Holistically the machine is extremely helpful to detect and diagnose any kind of ailment within seconds hence leaving no room for the patient to suffer due to delayed diagnosis.

In cases where patients are suffering from ENT problems the high resolution scan helps locate the problems in the fine ear structures and provide treatment accordingly. Furthermore the machine also acts an excellent tool for planning a dental implant.

“This machine is also used for research and development purpose by pharmaceutical companies in order to test their new drugs. It has helped them speed their process to understand the effectiveness of a particular drug,” Dr Avinash Kelkar further added.

With a high speed and high quality CT scanner the concern for the level of radiation dose arises. However, the machine ensures that the radiation dose is always at a low without compromising on the image quality and never crosses the level that can cause any harm to the patient as per our International Standards. In case of children as well the machine has been designed in a manner where it ensures a balanced radiation dose and image quality.

The Multi-slice CT scanner which is manufactured by GE health care has been recently introduced worldwide and is present only at Poona Diagnostic Services (PDS). This machine allows the doctor to diagnose very effectively and concisely thereby providing the right treatment and leaving no room for any trial and error, or any kind of delays. The machine which has been a huge investment for the PDS centre has proved very effective and helpful for many whose lives have saved due to early diagnosis, with the efficient centre management by Arun Roy and expert equipment operations of Gajanan Mudliar.
