Portsmouth: UK's most fortified port city famous for theaters, battleships, sea ferries and hovercraft rides
Portsmouth is a port city in Hampshire which is mainly built on Port Sea Island and is the only island city in the United Kingdom, which I happened to visit during my study fellowship stint at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic in 1997 for a course in School Technology. The city was about two-hour journey by surface from London then.

Famous for being the world's oldest dry dock, the city had worked as England's first line of defence during invasions to become the most fortified city in the world. It has many forts, called the Palmerston Forts, which are visited by the tourists.

Besides a quick sightseeing tour of the city, I had spent a good amount of time at HMS Victory battle ship regarded as the world's oldest naval ship and was the most popular tourist attractions then. I had no camera to take pictures, so I bought a postcard picture collage of the city and that of HMS Victory

The city is also famous for world's first mass production line at the Portsmouth Dockyard's Block Mills to become the birthplace of the worldwide industrial revolution and progress.

The City's motto is "Heaven's Light Our Guide. Portsmouth has several theatres such as the New Theatre Royal; Kings Theatre in Southsea; New Prince's Theatre and Southsea's Kings Theatre of which a few have the old charm of Victorian architect.

Another important event that attracts a lot of people to the city is the annual Portsmouth International Kite Festival is organised annually by the City Council and Kite Society of Great Britain jointly.

If one wishes to have a flavour of the sea, one can avail of passenger ferry service to Gosport and the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Wight.

Another thrilling experience on the sea is having a ride in commercial hovercraft service operated by Hovertravel.
