Post ban, liquor shall flow into Bihar from Uttar Pradesh
They say it will be boozeless in Bihar and bootlegging in UP as a sudden spurt in liquor sales could now take place in Uttar Pradesh especially in those districts, which border Bihar as the mafia is expected to push thousands and millions of litres of liquor into Bihar following the ban on booze there.

It was expected that Nitish Kumar may back out of his promise to enforce a complete ban on liquor in Bihar where the state earns thousands of crores in state excise revenue from the sale of both English and Indian liquor.

The reason that it is a big hit in the kitty of the state ordering the ban and several states, even high and might Haryana known for its famous high alcohol super strong beer, did experiment with a liquor ban once, but had to roll it back following interstate smuggling and other problems.

Now that Nitish Kumar has finally done it and even banned Toddy, which is a small cottage industry in the villages of Bihar, the state may face a flood of liquor with money flowing out and booze flowing in from the states of Uttar Pradesh - where liquor has been made cheap - and Jharkhand and West Bengal, which will all push both Indian liquor and IMFL into the state.

For the uninitiated it will be very simple to confirm this. The present sales figures of Indian liquor in the districts of Azamgarh, Mau, Ghazipur and Varanasi and even Deoria and Chandauli and Ballia should be jotted down as of today and then compared with the sale figures three months later. If there is interstate smuggling taking place then maybe the figures will show a huge jump in these Districts.

Why it is important to keep tabs of Mau, Ghazipur, Azamgarh and Varanasi? This is because all the main mafia dons in the state earlier used to run guns to Bihar. They are linked to these districts and are untouchable for the common policeman given their high profile political connections.

These same mafia dons will now find it very profitable to run whisky, rum and vodka to the prohibition state just as Al Capone made millions running rum and whisky and brandy from Canada into the USA during the prohibition years.

There is a saying among history buffs that those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. Bihar is about to write a new chapter in interstate smuggling of liquor and may witness several small hooch tragedies due to the consumption of spurious liquor as well.

The state full of poor people will now become even poorer with the government deprived on revenue from liquor sales, which will go to the liquor mafia of Uttar Pradesh where due to a strange coincidence the state excise of liquor has been reduced as well.

The state government of Uttar Pradesh could very well take the plea that the sudden spurt in the sales of liquor is due to the drastic reduction in prices of liquor, which has curbed smuggling from Haryana and Punjab into the state. However, liquor is still too highly priced in UP for that to actually happen. So will Uttar Pradesh begin its tryst with the Great Gatsby?
