Power and bus fare hike will have cascading effect on other services also, feel Telangana citizens
Telangana government has given approval to increase the domestic and industrial power tariff as well as bus fares in the State. A decision to this effect is taken by the Telangana Government on Thursday.

Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) cleared steep tariff hike for Domestic Consumers from July 1. Domestic Power Categories have been conveniently divided into three categories from this year. The consumers will have to shell out more money according to their consumption. However, Domestic Consumers using less than 100 units per month have been spared.

Increase stated by TSERC as 7.5% is incorrect. If one calculates as per new slab tariff it is more than that. As per old slab rates, for a domestic consumer if monthly consumption is above 100 and less than 200 units, the first 100 units will be charged at Rs. 2.60. For 101 to 200 units the per unit charge will be Rs. 3.60. If calculated for total 200 units of consumption the charges will be Rs. 260 + Rs. 360, total around Rs. 620/-. But, as per new slab rates, the consumer has to pay Rs. 330/- for first 100 units (Rs.3.30/Unit). For 101 to 200 units the charge will be Rs. 430/ (Rs.4.30/Unit). Apart from above energy charges, there are other charges added up in the monthly bill.

So is it actually a 7.5% increase as stated by TSERC?

The power consumers residing in residential apartments are burdened further due to tariff hike. As per the new tariff, even though the consumption may be plus or minus 50 units per month, power bill will shoot up drastically. For example, as per old slab under various rates our building's common service consumption is around 1500 units, get billing of around Rs.11,700/-, other charges levied adds another Rs.200/-. If calculated as per new slab rates it will be around Rs. 12,900/- apart from other charges, which are also enhanced for the same monthly consumption of power.

Because of this, RWA's will be either forced to increase the monthly maintenance charges or restrict some common services provided to the inmates.

The impact of hike increases in the telescopic method within the category as the consumption goes up.

Apart from the above shocker, there's 10% hike in fares of Express bus and upward services in inter district and state routes and Re. 1/- in City Service with effect from June 27th. It will have cascading effect in all services.

The citizens in the Hyderabad and Secunderabad cities do except that, they will land up paying couple of rupees more than what are they paying presently for a 3 kms travel in ordinary bus services. It will be further more in other services plying in the city.

Already on several routes there no bus services and halts have drastically reduced, due to which sharing autos are doing good business. The government and the TSRTC should provide better services and facilities to make citizens prefer RTC travel than other means of transport.

Another shocker of Property Tax enhancement is also on the cards for citizens of Hyderabad in August or September this year, as rationalisation and tax review work is under progress.
