Power ceiling, need of the hour
When there is an alarming proposition that you are going to be groping in the dark much sooner than later, there will be remarkable cooperation from consumers to be power-saving and eco-friendly. It is the power of the people for power security.

ENERGY CRISIS is as hot a topic of discussion as food or water crisis is, and the time for imposing a ceiling on power consumption is felt much more today than ever. This is felt because power shortage is not only denying light to the populace, but it cuts down on production of all types and life is getting more and more difficult.

Who would believe that a developed economy like the United Kingdom is going to impose power cut shortly denying light to millions of families. As this is the case, what can we do to manage our available energy wisely so that we could go at least a day longer than what we could have, if we were not to control consumption?

Power ceiling is the answer. Because monsoon this season is reported to be 25 per cent shorter compared the normal one and the state is going to face sheer water shortage and power crisis thanks to the same. So the need for tightening the power belts is felt. How can we impose a feasible power ceiling to consumers? If consumers could follow the following concepts, it would be easier for the government to slowly introduce a ceiling or a kind of rationing in the immediate future.
  • I am able to boot any bill amount generated by my power consumption. So, I keep on using my lights, fans, fridges and other power supported furnishing the way I wish. It is a callous behaviour. The thought that ‘you have more than enough’ does not give you the freedom to consume much more than what you want.
  • Power saved is power generated. Individual initiatives on power saving amounts to much more than institutional initiatives do. So your share counts much more than what you think others’ would.
  • Energy efficient electric fittings can go a long way in minimising power consumption and maximising output. For example, CFL lamps.
  • 24x7 appliances like refrigerators could be avoided if your life leaves you enough time to prepare food. This may add on to a family’s health indices too.
  • What is natural is right and lasting. So, it is right to say that no light is better or brighter and healthier than natural light. Let’s raise our buildings with enough room for natural light. So is the case with wind. ACs and fans could be switched off according to weather conditions if we keep provisions for light wind to be in our interiors.
  • Floodlights kept on around your house throughout the night may make the public look at you with great envy, but what you are doing by resorting to such a power extravaganza is nothing short of insensitivity.
  • The affluent in the society to could invest in alternative energy sources like wind and solar and they can resort to any kind of extravaganza out of the power they generate.
  • Limit your shopping habits especially during festival seasons. The sellers never tell you about the power needs of the things you buy. Not only you, but the state electricity grid too will suffer from unwanted purchases. There are innumerable things we can simply do without. We do not need an egg scrambler. So is the case with several electrical gadgets.
  • Follow the slogan: switch off today to switch on tomorrow. Make your children learn this. They will take the torch forward.
  • If you are decent and civilised, never ever steal power. And report any such case to the authorities, and be proud of your being responsible.

If the above ten pointers are brought to the public through the media, naturally, the public will think in terms of saving power and money by all means. And slowly, they will learn to live with less power than what they normally consume. Eventually, there could be a power ceiling applicable for all consumers according to their basic needs.

When there is an alarming proposition that you are going to be groping in the dark much sooner than later, there will be remarkable cooperation from consumers to be power-saving and environment-friendly. It is the power of the people for power security.

However, the initiative needs to come from the well off of the society. If they could do with less power than what one thinks, the rest will follow suit. It is the basic human instinct to imitate the better off that makes consumption shoot up. This is applicable to all sorts of consumptions: from food to philosophies.
