FOUR EARTHQUAKE struck within an hour's time near the northern coast of Papua, Indonesia, midday Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck at 12.16 pm local time about 123km southeast of Biak island located near the northern coast of Papua province. It followed shortly after a 6.6 magnitude quake in same area. The earthquake struck about 10km deep, making it a shallow earthquake according to Indonesia's meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.Just minutes earlier, at 12.06pm local time, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck only several kilometres from the epicentre of the first earthquake. That earthquake also struck 10km deep.
There was a swaying movement for about 40 seconds. People ran out of their homes, an AFP correspondent said. A tsunami warning is presently in effect for the area.Indonesia's Geophysics and Meteorological Agency issued a local tsunami warning but the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no Pacific wide wave was expected. Geophysics and Meteorological Agency technical head Suharjono said If a tsunami occurs it could arrive in 10 to 15 minutes because the distance is only about 100km away.According to latest reports the Indonesia police said “ At least two people were killed when a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Wednesday”.
