AN EARTH quake of magnitude 6 hit eastern Turkey in the wee hours of Monday and till now 57 people are reported killed. Most of the houses in six villages have been raised to ground.
Worst affected by the earth quake is Elazig province which has mostly stone or mud-brick homes that cracked and crumbled due quake shocks. Elazig province is located about 550 kilometers east of the capital town of Ankara. The earthquake came during the night and its epicenter was near the village of Basyurt. It was followed by more than 30 aftershocks of magnitudes up to 5.5. Hundreds of people are feared injured. The number of the dead and wounded is likely to rise as the rescue operations progress.
