PPTs are not the substitutes of teachers
Most serious and studious learners are complaining about the way power point presentations (PPTs) are being used in classrooms, which are not resulting into any learning.
"Earlier, telling a thing in the classroom was deemed as teaching, now, it is showing information and data that is treated as a teaching formality. Things have become worse than before as teachers have lifted the PPTs from the internet or used the cut- and- paste method from the textbook as complete paragraphs which are projected and read at times," complained a student of B.Sc. studying in a private college in Jaipur.

Due to lack of training in making teaching-oriented PPTs and their use as one of many teaching aids, many teachers keep on staring at laptop's screen while speaking, and this often results into waste of students' time, resented another student of the same college.

"The lectures or lessons need to be converted into projection-aided talks with a logical stepwise building of the topic idea into a conclusion at the end of the presentation. A PPT-supported academic talk of 30 minutes should be broken into sections, with a title slide or an outline slide demarcating each section followed by individual slides. Each slide should not have more than 12 words around which the teacher can talk for five minutes. After the talk, there should be 15 to 20 minutes of interactive session," said a teacher educator of audio-visual aids.

According to expert teachers, a PPT needs to be treated like a lesson plan and it should be practiced by the teacher to become skilful in using the new media as an instructional aid. Without a proper training and support system, new technique can do a lot of harm to students.

Research informs that the teachers should never be substituted by PPTs, rather, an intense training should be given for teaching with a PPT, and teachers need to have enough practice in use gestures, walk a bit, and make voice dynamic with proper voice training.

It has been recommended that four basic skills of making standard teaching-supportive PPTs and academic talk-delivery should be over-learned by teachers first before making use of PPTs for classroom instruction.
