CORRUPTION CHARGES against Prasar Bharti CEO BS Lalli have resulted in his suspension by the President Pratibha Patil.
Lalli had been under the scanner after charges of irregularity, which included giving away rights of broadcasting of the Commonwealh Games to a UK-based company SIS Live in a 246-crore deal.
Since the CWG scam was unraveled many controversies have come to light.
The Central Vigiance Commission even accused him of breach of Parlimentary privileges stating that that he in his capacity gave undue favours to some broadcast companies. B S Lalli, who assumed the CEO’s office in December 2006, was suspended after President Pratibha Patil signed the suspension order on Tuesday night. Prasar Bharati, an autonomous corporation of the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry, governs state-owned Doordarshan and All India Radio. According to the Prasar Bharati Act, any member of the corporation can be removed only after a Supreme Court inquiry sanctioned by the Indian President. Post building up of pressure by media and CVC alike, Lalli was finally suspended over CWG allegations and he was also accused of misappropriate use of his powers. It is already high time the government took some concrete action against the corrupt officials involved in one the biggest scams of the country. CWG, though ended on a good note has a lot of skeletons in the closet which are gradually being brought out.
