President and Vice-President greet people on Christmas
Greeting people on the occasion of Christmas, the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee said, “On the joyous occasion of Christmas, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all my fellow countrymen and wish everyone a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year."

According to PIB's press release, urging people to live for the higher purpose which Jesus Christ held out before mankind Mukherjee prayed, "May the Star that shone over Bethlehem sparkle once again and beckon us onto the path of peace on earth and goodwill amongst men."

"Let us recall on this auspicious day the teachings of love and kindness of Jesus Christ who for centuries has been an inspiration to mankind. May the Almighty shower his bounteous blessings on all the people of the world on this festive occasion,” he added.

Extending his greetings, the Vice President of India, M. Hamid Ansari, called upon people to celebrate this happy occasion by dedicating ourselves to Christ’s eternal message of love, compassion and forgiveness for all.

"Let us celebrate this happy occasion by dedicating ourselves to Christ’s eternal message of love, compassion and forgiveness for all. May this joyous festival shower everyone with peace, prosperity and happiness, said Ansari.”

Christmas is a public holiday in India. Christians joined by other communities celebrate the with fervour, gaiety and devotion. Celebrations of Christmas festival begin on the Christmas eve and continue till New Year's Day. Christians across the country mark the birth of Lord Jesus by participating in special masses organized in churches marked by carols, cakes, candles, Nativity scene and decoration of Christmas Tree.
