President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated conference on September 30 in Chandigarh on 'Cooperative Development, Peace and Security in South and Central Asia' organized by the Centre for Rural and Industrial Development.
In his inaugural address, President Mukherjee said that India's external engagement has been for promoting peace and stability and creating a supportive environment for multifarious development needs of the country. He lauded the foreign policy India and termed it relevant for South Asian neighbourhood as well as Central Asia.

In his address, Pranab Mukherjee underlined the challenges of development, security, economic growth and stability in the presence of trans-national security threats caused by drug-trafficking and terrorism.

He highlighted India's policy focus of three Cs: Connectivity, Cooperation and Contacts to promote closer ties in the region for growth and development. He was of the view that there was need for bilateral ties with like-minded countries for developing road transport, energy and water resources.

Moreover, energy projects could also prove to be game changers for geo-strategic stability, he added.
