President Mukherjee greets people on the eve of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal
On the eve of the festivals of Lohri, which falls on 13th January and Makar Sankranti & Pongal, which fall on 14th January, the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee has greeted the fellow countrymen warmly.

President Mukherjee, in his released message stated, "On the joyous occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal, I convey warm greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens in India and abroad."

He added, "Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal are expressions of joy and prosperity ushered in by a fresh harvest. May the celebrations of these festivals bind all sections of our society together with the spirit of love, compassion and joy."

"May these festivals which celebrate the hard work of our farmers and offer gratitude to Mother Nature bring happiness, peace and prosperity in every one's life," he wished.

As we know that Pongal celebration is meant to thank the elements of nature for the bounty of grain harvest primarily. Since the festival day falls during first month of the winter, it marks the favorable course of the Sun with longer days.

According to Vedic scripture, the Sun God is worshiped and thanked to flood our lives with the light of true vision of life.

The scriptures further say that for the spiritual aspirants this day has a special significance since the next six-months during which the sun travels northwards are highly favourable to lift their souls.
