President Mukherjee pays floral tributes to former President Dr. Zakir Hussain on his birth anniversary
President of India Pranab Mukherjee paid floral tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr. Zakir Hussain, the former President of India, on the occasion of his birth anniversary on February 8 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The ceremony was held in presence of officers and staff and floral tributes were paid in front of a portrait of Dr. Zakir Hussain in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He was also remembered at the Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi. He died on 3 May 1969, the first Indian President to die in office and is buried along with his wife on the campus of the university.

Dr. Zakir Hussain (1897 – 1969) was the 3rd President of India who died while in office. He is considered to be a great educator and intellectual, who rose to become country's first Muslim president. He had also served as Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962 and as Vice President of India from 1962 to 1967.

Zakir Hussain was also the co-founder of Jamia Milia Islamia and served as its Vice Chancellor. He was closely associated with the Indian freedom movement.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1963. In his inaugural speech as president of India, Dr Hussain had said that the whole of India was his home and all its people were his family.
