President, Vice President greet people on Id-al-Adha
President of India, Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President of India, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu have greeted fellow citizens on the eve of Id-al-Adha.

In his message the President has said, "On the occasion of Id-ul-Zuha, I extend greetings to all my fellow citizens, especially to my Muslim brothers and sisters in India and abroad."

He added, "On this day, let all of us rededicate ourselves to the spirit of trust, sacrifice and service, the essence of this festival, and share our happiness with people who are in need. May this unique festival enrich our composite culture, strengthen our unity and harmony and inspire all of us to work towards the well being of mankind."

Vice President Naidu, in a message, said that Id-ul-Zuha symbolises the spirit of sacrifice and truthfulness. "I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to the people of our country on the auspicious occasion of 'Id-ul-Zuha," stated Naidu.

"Id-ul-Zuha symbolizes the spirit of sacrifice and compassion in our lives. The Festival inspires the mankind to enshrine the values of truthfulness and compassion in their day-to-day actions and conduct," he added.

He wished, "May this festival bring peace, harmony and prosperity in our country."

On the occasion of the festival, the meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. The tradition is that the family retains one third of the share of the meat, while another one-third is given to relatives, friends, and neighbours; the rest is given to the poor and needy.

The festival is also called "Bakr-e-Eid" to follow the tradition of sacrificing a goat in India and other South Asian countries by the Muslims on this festival.
