A BOLD new cardio vascular disease (CVD) prevention initiative called the ‘Healthy Hearts Project’ was unveiled at the national level Prevent India 2010 conference held in the city of Hyderabad. It is a worksite cardiovascular disease prevention programme designed by Medwin Heart Foundation, the Indian Institute of Public Health and supported by corporate bodies. The project plans to enroll 50,000 members from 100 corporate organisations. The Healthy Hearts Project was formally launched by the Honourable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Rosaiah.
Coronary heart disease and high blood pressure have increased manifold over the past few decades. Of all the killers in the world, cardiovascular disease is the champion, responsible for 17.1 million deaths globally in 2004 and projected to account for 23.6 million deaths in 2030. Chronic diseases undermine the macroeconomic development of many countries. India will forego 237 billion dollar in national income over the next 10 years as a result of premature deaths caused by heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Speaking at the launch of Healthy Hearts Project at Prevent India, chairperson of the conference, Dr Ramesh Babu, managing director, Medwin Heart Foundation said the Healthy Hearts Action Project is an initiative to encourage work place interventions. The target populations’ baseline parameters would be established and various health promotion interventional activities would be facilitated and these parameters would be closely monitored for the next five years.
The health promotion interventional activities will be facilitated by a group of local champions selected from the participating companies. They would be trained in lifestyle modification tools and reviewed by a group of experts periodically to ensure sustainability. The idea is to empower the individual, not try to make their choices for them.
The goal is to inculcate ideal health behaviours metrics like-
Nonsmoking
Healthy weight
Appropriate levels of physical activity
Healthy eating pattern
And ideal health factors metrics like-
Total cholesterol
Blood pressure
Non fasting glucose
This project will be implemented in association with industry bodies like TiE, ITsAP, FICCI and Amcham.
