HAVING COME under fire for incessant rise in price of essential commodities particularly food, Union Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Sunday ascribed this phenomenon to the increasing purchasing power of the Indians.
Speaking at a convention of NCP workers and party leaders in Aurangabad, Pawar said that due to increase in the purchasing power of people, including the rural population has lead to rise in the price of farm produce and consequently caused rising prices.
Pumping of a huge amount of money through the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme as well as the implementation of Sixth Pay Commission has also added to the buying capacity of the people, added the minister. The agriculture minister also criticised the greedy elements in the system, who were trying to take undue advantage and making huge profit at the cost of poor people. He also hoped that with a good wheat crop in the offing, prices were likely to stabilize in the near future.
